Mount Huangshan tourism development balances ecology conservation

Updated: January 21, 2025

As a World Natural and Cultural Heritage site, Mount Huangshan Scenic Area has been practicing the "two mountains" concept for years, conducts tourism development and balances ecology conservation.

Mount Huangshan preserves a transitional forest ecosystem from global to north subtropical zones, extensive natural forest vegetation, diverse plant community types, and a vertical spectrum nurturing abundant rare and endemic animal and plant resources. It is one of the areas with the highest biodiversity at the same latitude.

Hu Xinting, director of the Mount Huangshan Biosphere Reserve Management Office, stated that there boasts 2,385 species of higher plants and 417 species of vertebrates, making it one of China's 35 priority areas for biodiversity conservation.

In recent years, striking a balance between showcasing Mount Huangshan's unique natural aesthetics and conserving the ecological environment has become a crucial issue that Mount Huangshan urgently needs to address.

In 2023, the scenic area reduced the maximum daily visitor capacity, established a real-name and time-sharing reservation platform for visitors, and improved forecasting, reservation, and warning mechanisms, effectively alleviating the instantaneous environmental carrying pressure.

In addition, Mount Huangshan implements the "closed rotation rest" system for attractions, with six peaks having already taken turns resting 19 times.

The scenic area also introduced projects such as conservation of vegetation carbon sequestration, scenic area energy substitution, and green scene creation to provide visitors with a high-quality ecological tourism experience.
