As summer begins, the lush hillsides of Huangshan are adorned with golden loquats, known as the "first fruit of early summer". Grown along the Xin'an River in Shexian county, the famed "Three-Tan" loquats - named after the villages of Zhangtan, Miantan, and Yuetan - are now ripe for harvest.

With a history dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), these loquats thrive in a unique microclimate, where misty mountains and abundant rainfall produce sweet and juicy fruit. This year's yield is the highest in recent years, thanks to favorable weather.

Over 20 varieties, including "Dahongpao" and "White Sand", are cultivated across 20,000 mu (333 hectares), with an estimated output of 5,000 metric tons. Due to cooler April temperatures, the harvest was delayed by a week, with peak sales from May 20 to June 5.

Local farmers have set up roadside stalls and online platforms to boost sales. Beyond fresh fruit, loquats are also processed into syrup, maximizing profits. Visitors can now enjoy the fragrant orchards and taste this nutritious delicacy, celebrated for its health benefits.
