The coastal city of Xiamen in East China's Fujian province rolled out a series of measures to promote the high-quality development of its biomedical industry, aiming to cultivate national biomedical industrial clusters and develop the city into a national center for the life sciences.

Xiamen is rich in marine biological resources and home to some of the country's top marine research institutions including Xiamen University, the Third Institute of Oceanography of Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Fisheries Research Institute of Fujian, all of which will provide a solid foundation for Xiamen as it seeks to develop its marine biomedical industry.

Over the years, Xiamen has made great breakthroughs in the research and development (R&D) of marine biomedicine, with a complete industrial chain beginning to take shape in the city.

Efforts have been made to advance innovation and promote large-scale production, aiming to increase the core competitiveness of enterprises in the city.

To date, the city has cultivated a number of high-tech marine companies, such as Fujian Anjoy Foods and Xiamen Kingdomway. New business forms have also been fostered in the city, including yachting, sailing and marine tourism, promoting the integrated development of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries.

Statistics have shown that Xiamen is now home to nearly 50 marine biomedical enterprises, including a number of emerging enterprises with internationally-leading technologies, and an industrial cluster focusing on marine biomedicine, functional foods and the development of marine resources.
