Construction on Jiangsu's first island-type substation, the Yangguang Island 110 kilovolt transmission and transformation project, was completed on Yangguang Island in Rudong, Nantong, Jiangsu province, meaning electrical installation and cable laying work is about to begin.

The project is a key initiative by the State Grid Rudong power supply company to support the energy development of Rudong. Once completed, the existing 20 kV power supply system on the island will be upgraded to a more robust 110 kV grid, effectively meeting the power demands of the four operational and under-construction LNG receiving stations on the island.

To enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of cross-sea power transmission, the substation has opted for a more economical and safe method of cable laying along the bridge. By utilizing the cable channel reserved in the Yellow Sea Second Bridge, a single 16-kilometer-long cable will be laid to connect the island with the mainland.

Furthermore, to combat the challenges posed by strong island winds and severe salt spray corrosion, the substation's interior and exterior walls were constructed using 200 millimeter thick aerated concrete blocks, eliminating the need for metal components in construction. The interior features desalination equipment and ventilation systems, while the electrical equipment heat exchanger casings are made of stainless steel and C5 corrosion-resistant materials.

To date, the project has already set a number of several provincial records. It stands out as the smallest radiating area and highest unit power load 110 kV substation in the province. Moreover, it holds the titles for the longest cross-sea distance and farthest cable laying distance of any substation in the province.
