Qi’ao Baishi Street

白石街.jpg

As a notable patriotism education base and tourist attraction, Qi’ao Village Baishi Street is granite-paved for its entire 1,000 m length.

In 1833, foreign opium barges gathered in the sea area of Jinxingmen. British troops went ashore at Qi’ao Island and massacred people. On October 15, before the first Opium War, the barges fired on Qi’ao Village, intent on selling opium there. Angered by the slaughter, the Villagers fought against and defeated the invaders in what is called the Qi’ao Cun Event. Reportedly, the British compensated 3,000 taels of silver that the Villagers used to pave Baishi Street. Today, a Memorial Square, statues of the gunners and ancient cannons at one end of the street attest to the heroism of the island dwellers.
