Attractive, effective sluice gate being built in Pingsha

updated : 2017-09-07

A sluice gate that can survive 100-year floods and tides will be built at the seventh cofferdam in Pingsha New Town of the Gaolan Port Economic Zone. The work is to be completed by the end of 2018.

The city-level control system adopts the architectural style of Wind & Rain Bridge, or covered bridge, a typical weatherproof corridor unique to the Dong Minority. The esthetically pleasing structures are found mainly in the provinces of Guizhou and Hunan, as well as in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

According to a project head, the facility meets the requirements of a 100-year flood and tide and is capable of channeling high water or exceptional tides occurring in any 50-year period. The sluice can control water generated by 24-hour rainstorms or by extreme tides occurring once every five years.

The project includes a sluice and a pump station, and complies with the Grade IV construction standards. The sluice can discharge flood water at a maximum speed of 93.48 m3/s; the estimated flow rate of the pump station is up to 16 m3/s.

When functional, the facility will support the Sanqian River Sluice in Pingsha New Town.
