Today's technology brings back yesterday's Macao

updated : 2017-09-25

An ongoing 3-dimensional interactive exhibition at Xinhua Bookstore in Jida immerses Zhuhai viewers in the Macao of Centuries Ago using state-of-the-art visual technology.

Display screens and interactive devices use patented technology to develop 3D animated images for Macao world cultural heritage sites such as Barra Square, the Ruins of St. Paul's (Sam Ba Sing Tzik), and Casas-Museu da Taipa.

QR codes on each image initiate a detailed audio-video introduction about related history and culture after being scanned with mobile phones.

A highlight is a time travel experience that takes visitors on a stroll around various attractions with instant scene changes, all showing different stages in Macao's development. The effects are rendered on a semi-circular stereoscopic display several meters wide.

VR technology offers an immersive visual experience.

Augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and holographic techniques ensure a fully immersive interactive environment.

Participants said they gained insight into the metropolis's cultural past by observing its religious and industrial developments.

Technology is just a means of increasing interactions with the exhibitions, said Yang Yi, chief designer at Macao Yangshi Design; the real purpose is to build a protective awareness of world heritages. The exhibition brings to life Macao's historical role in building bridges between China and the West along the Belt & Road.

First put on at the Macao Science Center (MSC) on July 8 this year, the show will end this week and circulate to other cities around China. The Foundation of Cultural Industry of Macao supports the effort.
