Tibet tourism further promoted at Zhuhai conference

updated : 2017-12-14

Compacts to further promote winter tourism on the Himalayan Plateau were signed in Zhuhai on Dec 12 between Guangdong enterprises and the Tibet Autonomous Region. The conference was themed Winter Travel in Tibet, Enjoyment of the Most Beautiful National Highway G318.

An Action Plan for Guangdong Tourists to Aid Tibet in 2018 was also signed between the Tourism Administration of Guangdong Province and Tourism Development Commission of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Since 2014, Guangdong has been one of several rich coastal areas helping Tibet to maintain social stability, improve livelihoods, protect the environment, upgrade education facilities while training local teachers, accept minority college students, modernize husbandry, and promote tourism, traditional medicine, and handicrafts.

Tibet (Xizang or western frontier) is called the "roof of the world" due to very high plateaus. The area has several of the world's tallest mountains, numerous high-altitude lakes, and magnificent canyons.

General information about Tibet as a winter destination was presented to Guangdong residents at the conference. Tibet has what one expects to find in a winter get-away resort area: warm sun, snow-covered mountains, glaciers, slow lifestyle, and intense humanistic atmosphere, said a Tibetan tourism spokesperson.

Situated along National Highway G318, Lulang International Tourist Town is known as the most beautiful place in Tibet, mostly secluded from the world. Supported by Guangdong, Lulang has opened to the international market, becoming a bellwether of tourism in the city of Linzhi.

Foreigners and residents of Taiwan need special permits to enter Tibet and, with few exceptions, must travel in tour groups. There are different regulations for Hong Kong and Macao residents which must be followed.

Attendees at the event included Done Cezhug, vice president of the People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region; Zhang Xilong, inspector of the Department of Tourism Promotion & International Liaison of the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA); Zeng Yingru, director of the Tourism Administration of Guangdong Province; Wang Songping, director of the Tourism Development Commission of Tibet Autonomous Region, and Zhuhai vice mayor Li Sang.
