The first significant infrastructure for the inspection of passengers motoring across the bridge between Zhuhai and Hong Kong or Macao was handed over to HZMB Zhuhai Border Checkpoint Construction & Management Co on Dec 28. The Zhuhai-side transportation center and road corridor, port offices, and municipal and transportation support facilities are still being worked on.
The 1.6 billion yuan ($246 million) first-section was contracted to the Zhuhai branch of First Construction Co of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau in December 2014. Since then, civil engineers have completed the main part of two inspection buildings, which have combined floor space of 279, 000 sq m.

The border crossings, with floorage of 502,300 sq m, are in the Zhuhai Border Checkpoint administrative zone of the Zhuhai-Macao frontier port island off the coast of Gongbei.
When complete, the passenger-cargo border crossing will be the only port to directly connect the Chinese mainland with both Hong Kong and Macao by highway.
The facilities are of strategic significance for the city's future development and a crucial part of Zhuhai's urban infrastructure, industry insiders say.
