Honghe east-west link on track for 2020 completion

updated : 2018-01-11

The pouring of 282 cubic meters of concrete was completed on Jan 2 for the final, and main tower, pier of the 9.6-km Honghe Bridge.

Denoted #3, the 53.8-m pier has a diameter of 2.5 m. Drilling began on Dec 26, 2017, and construction upon the new foundation is imminent. If work proceeds at the current pace, the bridge will be completed in 2020, according to Zhuhai Communication Group.

The 4 billion-yuan ($613 million) dual six-lane span will be a key East-West Wing passage with designed speed of up to 100 kmph.

Located south of Zhuhai Avenue, the bridge will run from Hongwan Interchange in Nanping Town to Hezhou South Interchange via the Modaomen and Hongwan waterways. It will join the link road of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) and access the Guangzhou-Macao Expressway Zhuhai section, Second Hengqin Bridge, and Jiangmen-Zhuhai Expressway.

When operational, the structure will strengthen the connection between Zhuhai's East and West wings, an approach to amplify benefits from the HZMB beginning later this year, said a local official.
