Ground was broken on Jan 13 for the largest petrochemical terminal yet at the Gaolan Port Economic Zone. Costing 2+ billion yuan ($310 million), the site will contain a 150,000-dwt oil-and-gas tanker berth and another of 50,000-dwt capacity, both scheduled to become operational in 2020.
The project was initiated by the Zhuhai branch of North Petroleum & Chemical Group (NPCC) to strengthen oil and gas transportation and transshipping, and thereby adding to deep-processing capacity for fine chemistry.
The smaller berthing facility can accommodate two 5,000-dwt oil tankers, according to Wang Yanlong, vice president of NPCC and general manager of the Zhuhai branch.
The undertaking is part of the Comprehensive Development Plan for the Guangdong Coastal Economic Belt (2017-30) and listed as a key Zhuhai port project in the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20).
Groundbreaking ceremony
The economic zone accepted the investment proposal and warehouse construction in 2011. It is to be an international logistics center, and an improvement in Zhuhai's comprehensive service level that is important for petrochemical development in Gaolan. It has strategic significance for Zhuhai Port's implementation of energy reserves and ongoing supplies for Guangdong, said a government official.
North Petroleum & Chemical Zhuhai was established in June 2010 to benefit the Pearl River Delta. A further project to produce 1 million tons of fine chemicals per year has entered the planning stage.
