The first steel structure for the 3.2-billion-yuan ($500-million) Chimelong Marine Science Museum was erected on July 31.
The aquarium in Hengqin New Area, Zhuhai, is expected to be the largest of its kind in the world. It is being developed as part of Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort, a world-popular destination.
The structure will be shaped like a spaceship to symbolize the future. It will be 604 m (661 yd) in length and 204 m (223 yd) in width with its highest point being 58.7 m (64 yd). Its floorage will total 37 hectares (91.4 acres).
Proposed Chimelong Marine Science Museum
The museum will house a range of aquatic life, including whales, and welcome up to 5,000 spectators a time with entertainment, business, and catering services.
Customized Q355 weather-resistant steel plates were utilized for its sustainability in the simulated ocean environment, according to Xue Feifei, vice-general manager and chief engineer of China Construction Steel Structure (Guangdong). The project will be highly advanced in both size and technical aspects, Xue added.
