The Guilin Yangshuo Golden Dragon Parade and Golden Kumquat Exclusive Event took place at the Yulong River Dock in Yangshuo, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, South China, on Nov 29. It celebrated contributors to the kumquat industry with a grand event set against a beautiful landscape.
Yangshuo's golden kumquats have shifted from a local specialty to a major industry. The county has 238,000 mu (15,866 hectares) of kumquat plantations, involving 31,000 farming households, with an annual output value exceeding 4.6 billion yuan ($648.8 million).
Notably, the oil-skinned kumquat makes up 70 percent of the country's total production and covers over 60 percent of the planting area, with a brand value of 4.73 billion yuan. It has been recognized as a national geographic indication product and has ranked among China's top 100 regional brands for six consecutive years, earning the title of "China's Golden Kumquat Capital" for Yangshuo.
Xu Xuefang, director of Yangshuo's agriculture and rural affairs bureau, said: "We honor every industry contributor. From cultivation to sales, from processing to research, every step forward in the kumquat industry reflects the wisdom and hard work of those contributors.”
The event highlighted a variety of products made from kumquats, such as kumquat wine and freeze-dried slices, demonstrating the "agriculture + tourism + dining" model.
Professor Deng Yinwei from Guangxi Normal University emphasized the importance of new technologies in increasing farmers' incomes and promoting rural revitalization, pledging to help farmers' wallets get fuller through the development of the kumquat industry.
Today, Yangshuo kumquats exemplify a blend of agriculture, culture, and tourism, presenting Yangshuo's unique path to the world.
